The Shift

The Shift
A worn out Papa emerged from the door
After eight hour tussle with files
His left hand cradling no lump of
Oil-slicked Brownness from Georgettan’s Sweet Store this time
But had gone for a lengthy one- an envelope
It grinned and vomited the whiteness of
Neatly typed English inside
His transfer order, our transfer order.
Six and half years, mother recalled
This house guarded us from the
Savageries of wind,  rain and thieves.
White walls and blue windows
Opening and closing to the
 Small Worlds of
Goa Auntie’s house of Bible Verses
Pinkie’s Pink house of Fried Chicken Smell
Jacob’s mansion and the tempting Guava Tree
Which never failed to upset the stones on the roadside and
Glass windows, the poor preys of ours, the Little Devils
“Don’t go”, said Pinkie clasping my hand
Her collapsed fountain of hair
Shimmering in the sun
“Don’t go”, mumbled Moovandan Mango Tree and its Flowers
“Don’t go”, cried the Ottakalan, the One-legged crow
“Don’t go”, shrieked the Baby Squirrel
Shift  Shift Shift
From hospital bed to home to another home to
Yet another home finally to six-foot earth
Shift is what makes life
Shifts shifts every time, everywhere
The pale yellow curtains departed,
 I closed my swollen eyes
I heard the wind rattle against dead leaves
Silently chanting to me:
“This flux is life and life is in flux.”

We, mortals.....

We, mortals destined for worms and flames,
See not the life fully,
Hangs in between the irrevocable mist of
Dreams unfulfilled,
Shadows of infinite losses.
We crave for what is not ours,
Little do we see that is ours.
Then the time flees,
Palsied shakes devour the youth,
Eyes lose their sight,
Ears, their sound,
Lips, their words,
Mind, their memories..
Finally on the doomsday shall a desperate soul
Leave this world to be lost into
The oblivion of a syncopated history.

CHOICES AND THE CONCEPT OF SILLINESS

It seems to me that there is nothing called silliness. It is a matter of perception. Everything is serious and substantial, because every serious thing can become silly in changed contexts. Ptolemy’s concept of universe may appear ridiculous now, but there was a time when it was accepted by many intellects and hailed as an irreversible theory. Karl Marx famous dictum on change is relevant to be recalled. In life, man goes through a wide variety of choices. His argumentative instinct tends to weigh them on the basis of their employability in a given situation, assess the pros and cons, and extract the best one. Even if the choice happens to be a false step, he will be vigilant enough next time to avoid a fallacious choice. Things change because the quest for reason differs from one context to the other, one man to the other. Man’s life is in itself, a big quest for reason- to find why he is here, why couldn’t have he born in some other place and so on. The life becomes successful when he constantly fires himself with questions and finds the answers; he relates everything with logic but his decisions in life is also affected by the cultural, social and psychological factors. Logic essentially aids him in manipulating the future consequences of an action. Thus, calculating, recalculating and sometimes betrayed by situations, he attempts to solve the predicaments he confront and ultimately deciphers the meaning of life and his quests get satiated.

PLEASE I DON'T LOVE MELODRAMA

There may be times when you let yourself to be swept by bleak thoughts. Isolation creeps into your space and you may find yourself at the cusp of a break down. You are not a person who lives on the edge and therefore even minor failures affect you a lot. Your eyelids sag with the weight of tears, they blur your vision. Your hand involuntarily moves towards the computer table in the hope of touching that metallic asylum-the cell phone. You click some keys in random and wait for the response from the other side. But the sweet feminine voice reminds you that you are running out of balance. Damn it! You roar. Suddenly your phone demands your attention. You shudder a little and check the number on the illuminated screen. Surprised to see an unknown number, you, for the moment, flout your usual custom of ignoring anonymous calls and press the green button, for you are so worn out by desolation that you do not mind in talking to a stranger now.  “An offer exclusive....” Your nose glows red. You are absolutely not in a mood to receive pesky calls. You throw away the wretched little thing which has been your companion for the past three years and for the attainment of which you conducted a hunger strike for a whole day. Now it seems to you that it is your enemy number one. You break into tears. The whole world is celebrating your agony.  Again your enemy cries seeking your attention. You ignore it. But you can’t resist the temptation that the melodious ringtone casts on you and its blue screen starts wooing you; you pick it before it goes dead. A familiar voice pours into your ears. You try your best not to let the other one sniff out your inhibition. But the other person, obviously shrewder than you yourself, picks the change in your tone. The caller shoots you with questions and while you desperately attempt to delude the other one by replying the most plausible answers, you forget the real root of your desperation. And by the time you wind up your conversation and press the red button, your hands will have wiped out the last tears and you feel embarrassed about your leaking nose. A smile pops up on your face and you are ready for the rest of the day. The caller may have sandwiched you with reminders of yet-to-finish assignments or with the worries of upcoming internal exams but they do not matter you anymore. Why? If you ask me I would say, “It’s always a pleasure to know that there is a pair of ears waiting to receive your words at the other end of their journey.”    (dvy, 20 May 21, 2011)
